The majority owner of Rivers Casino is betting big on Illinois’ new gambling expansion law, with plans to expand its Des Plaines facility, already the state’s largest casino. It also expects.
Finally, after months of waiting, New York becomes the 10th state with legal sports betting, thanks to Rivers Casino & Resort in Schenectady.
Rivers Casino operates its own sports betting product, BetRivers, and began taking wagers on Tuesday.
The long and strenuous road to the legalization of sports betting will be highlighted by the launch of Tioga Downs. It is expected to begin taking wagers at its FanDuel Sportsbook on Friday. The Lines received an exclusive tour at the new 2,600-square-foot FanDuel venue, which features eight betting windows and a video wall.
New York joins nine other states, primarily on the East Coast, to legalize sports betting following the US Supreme Court’s repeal of PASPA.

What we know about New York sports betting
Much to nobody’s surprise, mobile wagering was not able to make it through the New York Legislature this year. It still has a long way to go before bets can be placed on smartphones.
However, residents of the Empire State can now bet on a number of sports, including Major League Baseball, at its BetRivers Sportsbook. Barring no last-minute delays, New Yorkers will also be able to place bets on all four professional sports at Tioga Downs in Nichols.
Expect the other two commercial casinos to open retail operations in the coming months.
- del Lago Casino & Resort + DraftKings
- Resorts World Catskills + Bet365
Jeff Gural, the owner of Tioga Downs, told Pressconnects that a soft opening of its sportsbook is expected to happen Wednesday.
“I am confident it will be a great amenity to our facility, and I’m looking forward to officially cutting the ribbon on Friday.”
Gural is also the owner of Meadowlands Raceway in New Jersey.

Rules and regulations will also permit all tribal casinos to operate sportsbooks. As reported by Play USA on June 19, the Oneida Indian Nation has begun constructing a sportsbook at its Turning Stone Casino Resort.
- Oneida Tribe + Caesars
- St. Regis Mohawk Tribe + Fox Bet
- Seneca Tribe (to be determined)
Will New York mobile sports betting ever be a thing?
The short answer is, not right now.
A bill to legalize mobile wagering, S 17D, passed in the Senate but was unable to gather support in the assembly. Much of that is due to Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and his iron fist of opposition to online gambling expansion.
Supporters Sen. Joseph Addabbo and Rep. Gary Pretlow, who were optimistic at every turn, were not able to get anything done before lawmakers departed on June 19.
Legislators had hoped Gov. Andrew Cuomo would make mobile wagering part of his final budget proposal but, unfortunately, that failed to materialize. Cuomo submitted the state budget on April 1without mobile/online sports betting.
So far, FanDuel has been a dominant force in neighboring New Jersey helping the state to another solid month.
New Jersey generated$273 million in total wagers and $9.7 million in sports betting revenue in June.
FanDuel generated $4.4 million in revenue off its online platform and retail location at Meadowlands.

Firstly, roulette is available for a relatively meager 10 cents per spin. That, in comparative terms, is a lot cheaper than many live games and something Rivers Casino PA uses to satisfy the novices among you.
Moving up the ladder, you can play three-card poker and Ultimate Texas Hold ’em (which offers progressivejackpots) for 50 cents.
Baccarat is a little more expensive at $1 per round, while blackjack is $5. If we’re to be critical, we’d like to see live blackjack cost a bit less at Rivers’ online casino. Although $5 might not break the bank, it does put it at a level where beginners might feel out of their depth.
For us, the one area where Rivers Casino could steal a march on its peers is roulette.
LightningRoulette is another game which has brought a new dimension to roulette. On each spin, up to three numbers are struck with lightning. Depending on how the roulette gods feel, the strikes will add multipliers worth between 50x and 500x to the selected numbers.

If you’re lucky enough to have some chips on a lightning number, you’ll win significantly more than the standard 35:1 payout. Now, this game does have a minimum wager of $5 per round. However, the potential rewards are more than worth it. Indeed, even with $5 on a 500x lightning number, you’ll win a heady $2,500.
